Myths and Misconceptions

There are a lot of common myths and misconceptions regarding self-defense and personal safety, and we want to help you find the truth. Many of these misconceptions were formed from misinformation, old information, or socialization. Not all are formed from malice, but some are. So we’re here to help you navigate through some of the more common myths and misconceptions.

This week’s myth:

If I prepare for an attack, it will draw that energy into my life.

Learning self-defense and personal safety techniques will not draw violence into your life. It’s like taking safety precautions in a car. Putting on a seat belt does not increase your chances of being in a car accident. It can help save your life though. So learning self-defense techniques, verbal strategies, and awareness tools can help you recognize and avoid danger.

Some things you can do to protect yourself are to be aware, trust your intuition, and recognize the clues of a potentially dangerous situation. See what’s going on around you. Look up. Look around. Keep your eyes and ears open. Trust that gut feeling; it's rarely wrong. Believe what’s happening and believe in yourself.
